If you like to keep a desk with your records and work, but you dont like the clutter it presents to the rest of your study, then roll-top desks are for you. A roll-top is a desk that is a bit old-fashioned in nature, as the front of it rolls up to conceal its contents. In this way, they were popular with accountants, actuaries, and anyone else whose profession demanded a lot of clutter.
Well, roll-top desks have survived to this very day for the same reason: because they, with a simple rolling-up of the front, make a messy desk very clean looking. Roll-tops are not made simply of a horizontal piece of wood. Rather the horizontal work space is flanked by three walls which rise up both sides, and along the back. On the back, there are usually drawers into which various work items can be placed: pencils, staplers, calculators, and scrap paper.
Roll-Top Desks Users: You Know Who You Are
If you are prone to clutter, then you cant help it. Some of us are born as neat workers and then there are the rest of us. If you are the kind of person who needs many little drawers and filing areas to make sense of the chaos that is your life, you are a prime candidate for roll-top desks. They make it possible to temporarily file many of the things that you will get to later, and in that respect, they organize your life.
And, if you cant organize everything immediately and some clutter remains on your desk, dont worry: the roll-top will take care of that for you. Personally, I dont like to be constantly reminded that I am a slob when it comes to matters of work and organization. Roll-top desks allow me and others like me to easily and instantly conceal the mess of our lives with one simple action. It is a revelation, and helps us cope with our condition.
